A Bad Church Installment

In Genesis, you won’t find Adam’s first wife Lilith mentioned. The name Lilith is only mentioned once in the Torah, and once in the Holy Bible (Isaiah 34:12-14).

1. Wildcats shall meet with hyenas,
goat-demons shall call to each other;
there too Lilith shall repose,
and find a place to rest.
There shall the owl nest
and lay and hatch and brood in its shadow.
—NRSV Bible

Here is a translation taken for the St. Joseph, New American Bible;

Isaiah 34:11-12 But the desert owl..., the Lord will measure her with line and plummet to be an empty waste for satyrs to dwell in. 12.Her nobles shall be no more, nor shall kings be proclaimed there; all her princes are gone.

And, the verse goes onto read;

Isaiah 34:14-15 On Zion sinners are in dread, trembling grips the impious: 14.Who of us can live with the consuming fire? Who can live with the everlasting flames? 15.He who practices virtue and speaks honestly, those who spurns what is gained by oppression. Brushing his hands free of contact with a bribe, stopping his ears lest he hear of bloodshed.

The Lilith story is unlike any religious folklore you have heard before. It is not like the typical biblical story of the new testament which features religious fables preaching peace, love and harmony. As far as I am concern, not even the old testament can offer up a comparable story that might match Lilith's intriguing surprises. For in this particular tale, biblical enthusiasts like myself, will meet the bible's first demonic creature, and too, the bible's first feminist figurehead.

The demonic creature featured in this story is so evil that it's legendary crimes are still being guarded against, and protection from creature's terrors is still being asked for and sought after by many faithful Hebrew and Zoroastrian followers even today. The creature's most heinous crime......, eating newborn babies as they sleep at night. And, when this evil creature isn't out hunting for food, the women of the village might want to keep watch over their sleeping brother or sons, father or husband. For it is written that this creature likes to pleasure itself at night, by raping men as they sleep and using their seed from the wet dream to breed with, and make demon children.

Like I said, this story is nothing like the biblical stories before us today. The Lilith Legend reads like a Steven King, best-selling, novel. The story first starts off with a creation story. Unlike Eve, Lilith wasn’t made from Adam. In fact, her body was believed to have been created from the same soil as was Adam's body made of. And, where might that place be? From under the clay that lay at the exact same location of where the Dome of the Rock- now resides in Israel.

It is written that Adam became lonely in the Garden of Eden, and so he asked God for a companion. God granted Adam his wish, and Liliu (Lilith, named by God) was given life. God gave Lilith free will in Eden. Her laws were the same laws that Adam lived by. Her duties were in fact equal to those duties held by Adam. More importantly, neither of them were ever entrusted by God with more or less than each other. Adam and Lilith were equal partners in a equally shared Paradise.

According to ancient Hebrew texts, things in Paradise between Adam and Lilith were not so friendly. It is written that though God considered them equal, Adam did not. He thought Lilith should be made to please him in certain ways, especially when Adam desired to have intimate relations with her. However, Lilith would not make love with Adam. It wasn't because she didn't desire Adam, because she did. However, Adam's insistence that Lilith had-to-be the submissive partner, only effectively turned Lilith off. So she refused Adam's advances. Can't really say that I don't blame her. At the very least, he could have agreed to take turns. Lilith's plight was a direct cause and effect from her fierce feminist side.

Adam became angry with God over Lilith's feminist actions. He was also angry with God for creating a woman equal to him. By this time, Adam wanted someone created from HIS likeness. As Adam became increasingly angry with God, God decided to punish Lilith for her "disobedience." He punished her by forbidding her and any of her offspring, from eating from the Tree of Knowledge.

Therefore in time, resentment slowly grew into loathing, and loathing turned into passionate rage. Soon to follow would come the day, when Lilith began to eat from the tree again. It is said that the fruit from the tree of knowledge, was an infectious drug for her. When God discovered Lilith's secret, he was furious with her. So he gathered Adam to punish her. Nevertheless, before God and Adam had the chance to punish her, Lilith had escaped from of the Garden Eden.

Lilith was now free to roam the countryside. Even though, she was now considered a fallen angel of the night. Lilith's new world felt cold and hard to her, and so she began to miss the warm comfort of Adam's embrace. Feeling restless, and to aid in her needs- Lilith began to sleep amongst a different man every night.

Upon hearing, that God had granted Adam a new wife, Lilith grew scared of the offspring between him and Eve. Lilith began to loath children. Her fear would increase over time, and it soon turned into paranoia. Paranoid that of Adam and Eve’s offspring, would seek revenge at the bequest of their father, Lilith began to eat and curse innocent children. Because of her cannibalism, Lilith’s beauty morphed into that of winged demon.

Now- I cannot tell you if all this is true. I believe that it is ancient folklore, and its hidden message bears meaning. However, I also feel that it is a fable of sorts, written down so that future generations might know the true wrath, of living a life full of hate and sin. Why the Nicaean councilmen, didn't allow this story into the bible is a mystery and always will be. We all need to realize that, after sixteen hundred years, it's story is still told and it's message has always been the same.

In fact, it is because of this first Creation tale; people believed that women were cursed with a monthly bloodletting. It was called the Lilith curse. A curse brought forth by the power of God, to remind us of his wrath. Some people also still believe that Lilith roams the world, seducing men to breed. It is also widely believed that illnesses such as crib death, is in fact an affliction caused by Lilith. However, I would like to know what you think. Why do you think Lilith's story was banned from the bible?

For me, I am a firm believer in the concept of knowledge. I want to know all there is to know about God, what kind of character he is and what kind of spirit was he. I also firmly believe that if more Christians new of this Creation story, there would not be so many discrepancies.

In the original Creation story; men and women had already began to evolve, plants already had names, and animal life had already became abundant and prospered. It was widely thought, among the our ancient Hebrew ancestors, that God created Adam and Lilith for his own amusement. The ancients honestly believe that Adam, Lilith and Eve were God's "pet science project." That he made these individuals to be part of an experiment and to be some sort of special prodigies. God blessed Adam with powers that were consider greater than that of Gabriel, Michael, and other archangels. God ordered the archangels to serve Adam, because God created Adam from his own likeness. Adam also had God's ear. He was thought to have visited Adam often, and converse with him about life and the universe.

Nevertheless, the point is that it was widely thought amongst the ancients that the "creation of man," happened long before them. It is important to understand that the ancient Hebrews were smart enough to look at the world around them, and to know that the earth had existed long before them. Therefore, I believe that is why there is so much controversy over the creation story and evolution. It is widely believed by believers and non-believers both alike that today's biblical, creation story, is full of riddles and evolutionary plot holes through out the entire thread. Banking my money that the Roman Catholic Church was seeking unequivocal dominance over new Christian believers, dabbled with the creation story to fit its needs back then. It would have been the Roman thing to do. The Romans didn't care how a story ended or how it was written just as long as the words were Roman and the message a Roman one. They could have never foreshadowed Darwin's evolutionary theory, anymore than we could have. Another factor we need to consider here is that this story, like the Genesis story, is not the only Creation stories ever written. There are many different biblical Creation stories, and my favorite is titled "The Life of Adam and Eve." In this particular story, readers are introduced to a much stronger Eve character, than the one in the biblical Canon of today, with a much more compassionate and loving Adam figure- who not only defends Eve's honor but verbally argues with God over Eve's innocence. In my favorite Creation tale the narrator isn't someone looking from the outside in, telling a tale. No..., it is a story that is directly spoken from the mouths of Adam, Seth, and Eve in first person. However, I do firmly believe the first creation story ever told was the Lilith story. The age of the story and the evidence left behind by our ancestors pertaining to the story itself, are about two thousand years older than the story now found in our bibles today. In fact- with regards to Darwin's theory, this Creation story in my opinion, it is the one that best lends itself to an evolutionary concept.

So why was the Lilith's story left out of the bible?

I think in part that the Lilith story was left out because this story gives woman some pretty serious power. Now think about that for a moment. At the time that the our Holy Canon was first put together, the Roman Catholic Church was under the direct rule of the strict Roman Emperor Constantine. The Emperor Constantine was the epidemy of what it meant to be Roman, and although wealthy, aristocratic, Roman women could rule and hold power- the majority of Roman women lived under the poverty line, and no better off than was the common, household, slave at that time. Average Roman women were not allowed to be a man's equal. It just wasn't allowed. Therefore how then could they be equal in the eyes of God?

We also must remember that these first Christian leaders, had converted from Pagan religions. They were not life long believers like we are. Because of this you can speculate that many of their pagan customs, intermingled with the new and exciting Christian ideas. What naturally emerged from the mixture, was but of course a tyrannical, male-dominant religion. Woman were forced to do slave labor, and be beggars to the stronger sex. It is also a known fact that women were kept uneducated, and that women were not allow to read the bible on there own. If they were that scared of women, it makes perfect logical sense why they kept out the feminist version of the story.

Tell me what you think. But no name calling please.

Quite interesting...If only the world was cognizant of the big picture...Much would be different... It would be harder to lie and sell tales of temptation; but then politics and religions would have to find a new home...

I am left wondering were you got your version on the Lilith story. I have been researching her lately, but this is the first count i have come across that states adam and lilith were able to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. I have also read that Lilith left Eden, not that she was bannished. I'm just curious to know your sources, plz let me know i'm very interested to learn as much as i can about Lilith

Interesting points. I first learned of the story of Lilith about 8 years ago when I was researching the Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah. In Kabbalah, Lilith read from the book of God which gave her Godlike powers and she was no longer an equal to Adam, but God favored Adam and gave him a subservient woman, Eve. Lilith vowed to take the first born son of all their offspring. I think to this day, some sects of Jews perform a ritual to ward off Lilith after their first son is born.

I just thought it an interesting story and made some creative changes for my screenplay. Instead of her becoming the Queen of demons she becomes the Mother of all Vampires...

There is a long explanation in the Zohar about Lilith. As I understand it, she represents a transition point when the Collective Soul began to choose to become Objective versus becoming Subjective. The diminished ability of our emotions to influence our actions is when EVE became Adam's spouse. Hence Lilith became the mate of demons and the Serpent himself. I always say, a Daimon (instinctive genius ) that is ignored becomes a demon. So Lilith (emotion) became a demon when she was once equal to logic and foresight in importance. (We ofcourse began to see how inconvenient it is to deduce the best course of action when our emotions are at war with logic) The children of Adam and Eve represents the product of Objective Knowledge. Naturally, the champions of Lilith are women, because women are more prone to think with their hearts.

The tree of knowledge which Lilith loves is the concept of knowing what she wants and what she does not (good and evil) and identifying with it, therefore she is feisty because she rejects many things on the basis of what feels right or wrong.

Interesting hub worthy of discussion.

( that's how I am interpreting the metaphors presented in the Zohar, don't be surprised if you read the Zohar and not find it there )

DrJ, your hateful comment was unwarranted. However, thank you for bringing it to my attention that my hub needed editing. Even though you did it in such a hateful manner. Furthermore though, I think that you are just afraid that women are your equal. Sad existence really, to be afraid of something so small.

IntimateEvolution, I wonder if we think of Scriptures are different peoples' versions of events - instead of "first versions and later versions" and "more correct versions," will be be able to think more clearly about things like the Lilith narratives, creation accounts, etc.? In my experience with studies so far, I've been warned not to try and label versions as "correct" or "incorrect" because there are so many translations and scholars from many cultures describing the ancient world. I'm just taking a big guess here, but I am thinking that the accounts of Lilith are probably ALL valid because they may be multiple cultures describing Lilith, each with their own account with their own variances in world view. I think in our modern times, we assume that writing came about, was practiced, etc., the way we write and record things... really, "accounts" of personas might have survived for very long periods as narrative, blending in and out of various cultures, words in many languages, etc., in a sort of symbiotic way. Anyway - sorry to be so verbose here - but if we think of multiple cultures and accounts does this mean we can think about Lilith differently?

Yes it does. Thanks for making me think!

You bring up great points about what might be fact to some, and what might be facts to another. One only has to look at to the nativity story, to understand your meaning. I mean, here's the story of Christ's birth. In Islam, they have a much different story of Christ's birth, than what Christian followers believe. Over a billion people on either side believe their story is real. Like you stated, whose to say they aren't? Not me.

I always appreciate what you bring to the table.

This appears to be a variant of some of the Asherah / Baal myths of the same region ... one of the long term truths of legends from the beginning of time until now is an inherent distrust between men and women ... whether men become brutes because they are naturally brutes or they are reacting to attempts at feminzation or if women become shrews naturally or because of abuse of men ... the fact is that once the battle of the sexes is a battle, men and women both loose.

Whether these legends are cautionary or poetic telling of history ... I don't know ... I do know that there are truths beyond facts.

Lilith was to have had many sons, but they all died before childbirth. So I'm not sure of the storyline you are speaking of. Sorry.

thank u IntimatEvolution....but it even says that not all died. 94 died a few did get away. There is one that is named as i said above, and that is the name he gives and how he describes himself.

Actually it is a shame, there is much written and said about her, yet hard to know what is is correct, as it is claimed that what is written about her refusing to lay beneath Adam and then flying away from the garden is not so.

How are we to learn what is correct and what is not if the proper information is not given.

But then I guess it is up to those that have had and still have encounters with her to say, as long as it is the truth.

Blessings to all

excellent work, the conclusion i think is spot on, the bible and other religious text have been manipulated for thousands of years into a tool to control the masses. I have only started delving into the story of Lilith but have studied much about the bible and other ancient religions. To me at this point Lilith seems to not only represent the strength and equality of women but also the power of freewill, she seems to follow her emotional urges even in the face of opposition from the masculine energies. The whole "evil" nature of Lilith seems nothing more then an attempt to discourage others from following her footsteps. On another note I still have trouble contemplating a benevolent and kind God that Kills the greater portion of his children, to me no matter what my kids do I would never kill them for something they did wrong and I am an imperfect human.

Hey ME, I couldn't agree with you more. I have a real hard time with the biblical Noah story, and let's just say that is what it exactly means to me- Fictional Satire.

I find it incredibly ironic how women are betrayed as a lesser rather than equal to men; especially after reading the Gospel of Mary. Because one of the aspects of the Gospel of Mary, which I find intriguing is the role she played amongst the other disciples, and how Jude and Thomas both note their observations of Jesus Christ when he was round her, and how Christ favored her over his other disciples. Christ says the power of God can be found in women, and that women are suppose to be treated with a greater respect, and given more spiritual authority as in regards to religious leadership. The Gospel represents the words of Jesus, as spoken to Mary Magdalene. So........, it really calls upon us to look deeper into what was contrived by men for the benefit of man, verses what God conceives to be right.

Hey thanks for commenting. I hope to see you again.

Hmmmmm... i have a question... do you think that Lilith can be reincarnated..if not if she is immortal..could it be possible that she lost her memories and gain humanity, but when she found out who she really was... could it be possible that she could choose her own path.. a path to become good or stay evil. Lilitu was also known as Hecate in Greek mythology.. Hacate is the dark moon goddess the goddess of witchcraft and demons. I believe in my opinion that lilitu is still out there, waiting to find out who she really is

An interesting subject and so I had a quick browse at Wikipedia on Lilith. From what I see she found a home in many Babylonian and mesopotamian folklore accounts as well as Jewish folklore.

Why she didn't make it into the bible might not be so much because of her feminist views but because somewhere the powers that be needed to make a clear demarcation in what they considered God inspired scripture and the mythical vanities of men.

If we give credibility to her existence then we should also give credibility to the whole pantheons of gods and demi-gods all every culture around the world.

THe reason it wasn't included in the Bible is the Nicaean Bishops met in 325 AD, and the Lilith narrative didn't show up in Jewish literature until sometime between 500-700 AD. The problem is the story is just not an old one at all as far as Biblical standards go, in fact its pretty late!

Thanks for writing this... I have been watching the television show "Supernatural" and Lilith is one of the characters. I became curious about who she was and if she really existed. It seems the show doesn't touch on the lore of who she really was. I am a Christian man myself, yet I try to have an open mind about all things. To say my beliefs are all true and no one else is right would be very wrong of me to say. I was wondering who/what your source was. Would you know any other information on this subject? Thank you so much! If you have time can you please send me an email at theawesomegangster@yahoo.com. Thank you again

I have been deeply intrigued, yet perplexed by the story of Lilith. And what an enigmatic tale it is. I see her story often explained away as a myth or ancient "campfire folklore", so I cannot help but wonder for myself if everything written can be explained away the same. In reality we have no way of knowing what was real and what was not in terms of ancient times. Looking beyond the creedence or moral edge that we can take from such tales, the epic tale of Lilith somehow came to light in nearly every corner of the known world!! That definately says alot and speaks for itself!! I'm having a difficult time finding out the timeline in wich the story of Lilith was first recorded...anyone?

The name Lilith and images of her date back to the time of the ancient Sumerians; 11,000bce. The record myth dates back to the third century bce when the oral tradition was documented in writing found in the Book of Jublilees.

I think Lilith was dam right to leave punk ass Adam, he wanted her to do as he said and knowing that she was not made to walk in Adam's foot steps she pick up and left but her being made into a demon is crap. She is never mentioned in the bible because the bible was written by a bunch of egotistic men that want women to kiss there feet and be under them so they made such a woman, eve, and then they make this woman pay for all other women by making Adam say that it is woman that made man to fall. but if you read the bible care fully you would see that when eve was eating this so call fruit Adam was standing there with her and did nothing he just allowed her to eat this thing, I bet if Lilith was still with Adam that snake would not even try that stuff if any woman read my post plz do not be a eve, be a Lilith who knew exactly who she was and was not afraid to be that powerful woman that The Most high made her to be and another thing to they always mention GOD as he, how do they know that? does that answer your question why Lilith was not mentioned as Adam's first wife? To make things more clear if GOD is mentioned as a he then the importance of the woman does not mean anything today, get it?

gnik kcalb 5 weeks ago

If in the bible GOD is a he and is superior then it would be easy for men to rule over women because they would say that in the bible GOD is a father and is at the head of every man and being that the bible is the so called word of GOD why would you challenge it. So since the man is already made to rule over all things over the earth why would you want to mention a woman that has the same privilege as a man in the bible. If you did that then men would not have the power that they have today over some of the women, It all about domination and control. Women you are equal to every man but that does not mean you can do what you want when you want, because a man needs a woman and like wise a woman needs a man, this thing is about understanding each other responsibility and differences and working as one to for common goals that is what Adam did not understand however Lilith did that is why she left him.

Lilith left because she would not submit to being on bottom all the time during a intimate encounter. I guess you can say she just wasn't that into the missionary positioning.

gnik kcalb 5 weeks ago

That is true lol but in her heart she did love Stupid Adam and like any other feminine being wanted affection and appreciation and Adam with his balls in his hands could not think about how to love this beautiful being that the Most High had made special and equal to him like some men the power got to his head and he let the one feminine that was perfect for him fly away and that not the thing he let another male being love what was intended for him and then GOD goes and makes her pay for not submitting to punk add Adam but hey the lies goes like this "This Is A Man's World" and GOD is that male, right? but for me GOD is both and or is neither but GOD understands equal union unlike what is written in the bible, and in logic it is the right for a man to be to the bottom as he is the foundation that bears the total weight of a building, men are suppose to guide women and women guide a man as the task is for both since the Most High is a combination of both or neither since the union of a man and a woman is the formation of the Most High, as in there spirits becomes one. Adam should have just tried the lily position lol.
