Sex and Spiritual Enlightenment

Ancient Chinese philosophers gave the act of sexual intercourse the most intriguing expression. It is called, "clouds and rain." The metaphor described heaven making love to the earth, and representing perfect order. The clouds represented the woman's role in the sexual affair, and the rain represented the man's heavenly role on society. However, a practicer of this ancient Chinese philosophy not only associated this behavior as a way of achieving pleasure, but, as a way for a mortal man to become immortal. They believed if a man could ejaculate more than ten times in one given coupling, he would become immortal. If he ejaculated three times or more, he would be able to cure all disease. If he ejaculated two times, all his ambitions would increased greatly. If he only ejaculated one time, he was said to become stronger.
In ancient China, there were three schools of thought. These three schools were centered around Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Confucianism's principle goal was the protection and continuation of the family. Taoism's center goal was immortality, while Buddhism focuses were geared towards achieving perfect spiritual balance by transcending life, death and immorality in order to become enlightened. Sex played a large role in each of these schools of thought. Confucianism and Taoism believed that the opposites of human nature made up life. The opposites appeared in forms they called essences. For example the man's essence was expressed through his semen. Which they believed was spent to enhance and prolong life.
Ancient Chinese philosophers believed that diet, exercise, and sex had to be a harmonious grouping, in order to achieve balance. The most important bonding element to achieve harmony was passion. Therefore, many elderly Chinese men often chose young teenage lovers, to mold and commingle with in order to aid in their immorality. These teenage lovers were taught to provided these gentlemen with heighten exotic pleasure, by way of "pillow books." However, it is not until much later before women's needs were mentioned or even discussed.
For the most part, ancient Chinese cultures were centered around men. "Gambling Wild-horses" and "Winding Dragons" were names given to different types of acrobatic pleasures found in the pillow books. These ancient texts were nothing more than instructional sex manuals, used to teach young woman the how to's to pleasing their man. According to the pillow books, there were thirty different sexual positions.
It was not until the rise of Confucianism were the roles of woman changed. The focus of society change to the health and balance of family unit. Men starting desiring more mature woman, who were believe to be better suited for motherhood. Names like Jade Stalk and Golden Locust, were now given to some of the various ways to pleasure a woman during sexual activity. In ancient Japan, woman at this same time were encouraged to have multiple partners, much like that of the ancient Chinese man. In both ancient societies, brothels played an important role in maintaining sexual harmony. In fact, a Geisha in Japanese culture was considered high society.
It was not until the introduction of Buddhism into everyday society, did the diversity between the three principle groups finally unite. Yearning and love was the key component, and the one common denominator found to be needed. It was believed that yearning and love lived in the hearts of Chinese women and men. These two elements could be found in every aspect of Chinese living, from their education system to their religion. It was the basic belief that everyone yearned for a higher understanding of their social embodiments, and that love led the way. This characterization was seen through out many of the philosophical teachings during the second century bce. It was this balanced connection, which caused them to make the leap in believing that the closeness shared by a man and woman during sexual intercourse, could help them to become more enlightened.
In Buddhism, it is believed that in order to obtain enlightenment, one has to have their heart, mind and soul in balance. Therefore, sexual intercourse was a way for the body to expelled harmful elements from someones soul and mind. Sex was the body's way of cleansing itself of decay, in order to maintain natural healing along the way. They also felt that this expression of love, shared by the man and woman at that moment of climax, was a way to show their love for God, and to feel the of God as well. They essentially developed the philosophy that a healthy sex life, was a short cut to enlightenment. In so doing so, they also came up with the idea that your body was dependent on sex to create an inner wholeness within oneself, and that once this wholeness was achieved that person could be well on their way to accomplishing Buddha.
You know- I'm not sure how I feel about this philosophy. It certainly makes sense to me. However, in the dogma of Christianity's philosophical beliefs- sex has always been our own worse enemy. The concept and idea of needing sex to become completely healed, and to become whole from within, goes against the grain and idea that Jesus Christ is the only true way to become- as the Buddhist would say, "enlightened." Therefore, I am left with many unanswered questions. Even though, I do feel that the attraction of opposites are essential in maintaining balance within the universe. I can actually see how this could possibly work to a person benefit. I am curious to read your thoughts.

I like the idea of saying urgently to my wife, "Honey, we need to do it again. I almost reached enlightenment last night and we owe it to ourselves for at least one of us to achieve it." hahaha But seriously Julie, the Bible's teaching of "one flesh - one spirit" makes so much sense. When each honors one another in the Bible fashion, she actually owns me and I her. I take care of myself because when I exercise I am taking care of her property. Of course, we both belong to God and our bodies belong to Him. I am doing things for God when I do things healthy for my body and hers. Sex is for her, from my perspective, and sex is for me, from her perspective. She lets me know her needs as far as her body rhythms and desires and I strive to fulfill them. She does the same for me. Enlightenment is a spiritual thing which no one can reach without God, no matter what anyone tells you. But spiritual does spill over into the physical. Everyone knows that a sexually fulfilled MARRIED person lives longer than a sexually fulfilled UNmarried person. I believe that to be because of the principle of marriage and the sex one owes to one's spouse. The Bible clearly says not to withold your partners need from them and I believe playing with such things for power violates that principle and will result in bad things and certainly won't contribute to any spiritual enlightenment. Loved the hub. Love ya Julie.
Julie, this is a great hub. And I like no body's comment. While the bible is pretty strict concerning unmarried sex, it does say that we should not withhold ourselves from one another as a married couple. I do prefer the eastern idea, that we reach enlightenment through our sexuality.
Namaste.
How interesting! Thanks so much for sharing :)
Hi Intimte,
thanks for your hub. Not sure that the expression of sexuality is the pathway to heaven though, (whatever a person's "heaven" may be). My sense is that the loving expression of a person's sexuality with another (my spouse in my case) is for our earthly benefit, both in the bring of children which is a blessing, and our own mutual enjoyment which is, or should be, relationship enhancing.
My conviction is that finding "enlightenment" here on earth and finding "salvation for eternity" are two different things, and that the idea of having sex as a way of achieving either, dispite the fact that I love the idea, is really a spiritual rationalization for having more sex because it feels nice.
Not sure what you think?
Cheers, Dags the Drover.... btw happy to be a follower of yours
A great hub....!!
thanks for sharing....!!
Sex and Buddhism have no place together... The idea of achieving enlightenment though sex is counter productive!!!
No... I am not telling you that I know more that 10000 years of proven Chinese tradition! I just happen to know that sex is in no way related to enlightenment in Buddhism. There are many sexual practices found within the Chinese history. Buddhism however is not one of them. Taoism, I do know for a fact, has specific sexual practices in order to achieve some level of awareness.
Those elderly Chinese men took girls as young as nine years of age to begin their training in these specific arts. The reason being that the yin energy obtained is at its most potent just as the girls reach maturity.
Personally I don’t agree with the notion that any real lasting effect can be sustained from such practices and they are mostly a waste of time. Now a days I don’t think any such practice is a viable way to attain any type of spiritual awakening because in order to properly execute these practices one needs a very cultivated master to learn from; and you won’t find many legitimate teachers around. Allow to rephrase finding a real practitioner of this particular art would be like cooking sand and expecting to get rice, its just not going to happen. The only way to find such a teacher is if they found you.
This is just my opinion and you may take it however you want so long as everyone is clear that sex is in no way related to enlightenment in Buddhism. In fact it is the biggest hurtle one must over come in order to achieve enlightenment.
Did you click on that link? One of the foundational rules is to avoid sexual misconduct!
I think our society and culture is too prudish about sex and sexuality, and the process of making it culturally dirty I think actually creates and promotes perversion rather than inhibits it. It's perhaps the only real complaint I have with American culture. I'm not saying I want sex to be "free" or for people to be permiscuous and irresponsible. But I think we should be more open about it, and certainly more free in our personal engagement sexually. Sex is a wonderful communion between two people who love each other, and I think has been proven—beyond the obvious purpose of procreation of the species—to be absolutely essential to a healthy and fulfilling life.
Interesting hub!
Voted up!
Hi IE, I was very interested in what you wrote. The older I get the more I realize that "Everyone" (meaning all of the religions) gets a little right. I am a Christian. And at one time would have been thrown into the barrel marked "Right Wing Conservative Christian". But I have to say that I think that there may be something to this Eastern idea of sex.
However in a different context than the Eastern Religion gives it. Our relationship with God is decribed using the illustration of that of a bride and groom. Within sex we come the closest we can as humans to the divine creativity, in that we conceive and bear children through it. And sex it's self reunites us as one body, "bone of my bone flesh of my flesh."
As Christians we are created in the image of God. And sex brings us face to face, literally, with the image of God within us.
In the tenderness and love within sex we are able to mingle our needs with those of our spouse. Unfortunately, we are flawed and therefore sex has become flawed. Too bad. If we could really acheive sex the way I think God had it planned for us that would be something. But I think that it is at it's best a pattern of intamacy that does transcend earthly boundries.
Meg
Really wonderful writing. Very informative and true. Act of sex certainly passes through 'bliss' and same blissful feeling you get in meditation and ultimately enlightenment. I read it some where that bliss is created when energy flow. In sex it flow downside and in mediation it flow upside. Sex certainly show you some glimpses of your higher path.
Thanks so much for sharing this information. I still wonder why we weren't taught this kind of stuff.
Loved reading this hub, IntimatEvolution, so informative!
As a Norse pagan I believe sex isn't only an earthly activity that the Gods want us to enjoy, but a sacred practice that helps mortals become close to the Deity. And when a couple making love also happens to be in love they come as close to seeing the divine purpose than any other time in our lives. The notion that sex is sinful is, like the perception of mortality, only a device of the great deceiver, Loki, who seeks to turn souls from uniting with the everlasting divine.
